Unbelievably an article has recently
appeared in a Sunday national newspaper highlighting the plight of a
two year old girl, locked in a wooden cage for up to 20 hours a day.

Five of the Explorer Scouts who travelled to
Romania last year will be returning in July this year to work
voluntarily with the disadvantaged children in the Casa Harului
centre. Stephen Slater, Scott Parker, Gemma Beasant, Jenny Slater
and Stephen Rochelle were so moved by their experiences last year
that they have funded the trip themselves in order to donate so as
simply as affection and attention to the children. We wish them all
the best and thank them for their assistance.

It is deep regret that I announce the recent death
of one of our colleagues, Mr Tony Corless. Tony was involved with
the charity for some ten years, visiting Romania many times with the
aid convoys and helping at the Casa Harului centre. He was a very
giving person who would drop what he was doing at a moments notice
to help others. He will be sadly missed.

June 2005
In May 2005 a group of 32 young people and adult
leaders from St. Georges Scout Group and Blackburn West Explorer
Unit travelled to Casa Harului for a one week stay whilst the centre
was not being used by other children. There they joined a group of
Scouts from Hunedoara making new and lasting friendships.
One of the focuses of this trip had been the
fundraising the young people of the Scout Group had undertaken in
order to support projects in Romania. Whilst there the children
helped to repair a playground, and also to build a Camp fire circle
/ outdoor chapel for the centre.
The impact this experience of visiting Romania had
on the children was such that they gave some of their spending money
to help sponsor a week's camp latter in the year. They also decided
on how they would like the money they had raised to be used. This
has included providing games and games equipment to Casa Harului,
the building of a playground at the school in Carteju De Sus, and
sponsoring the wage of a teacher at the Bethlehem Centre.
